A severe reduction of these cells significantly weakens the body&#8217;s defenses and can lead to AIDS, the advanced stage of the infection.<\/p>\n<p>When CD4+ T lymphocytes fall below 200\/mm\u00b3, the immune system is considered severely weakened, even if no obvious infections are present.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Symptoms and Stages of Infection<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Acute Infection (2\u20136 weeks after exposure)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, lymphadenopathy.<\/p>\n<p>In some patients, symptoms may be mild or even absent.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Asymptomatic Phase<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lasts up to 10 years or more.<\/p>\n<p>HIV slowly destroys CD4+ T lymphocytes without obvious symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AIDS (Advanced Stage)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Low CD4+ count (&lt;200\/mm\u00b3).<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms: fever, fatigue, weight loss, myalgia, diarrhea, skin rashes, oral\/esophageal fungal infections, herpes infections.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>HIV Transmission<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>HIV is transmitted through specific body fluids (blood, semen, vaginal\/rectal fluids, and breast milk), mainly through:<\/p>\n<p>Unprotected sexual contact<\/p>\n<p>Sharing contaminated sharp objects<\/p>\n<p>From mother to child<\/p>\n<p>It is not transmitted through casual social contact, shared food, or insects.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Detection of HIV antibodies in the blood.<\/p>\n<p>PCR for detecting the virus&#8217;s genetic material (RNA).<\/p>\n<p>Rapid tests using a small amount of blood or saliva (laboratory confirmation required).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Treatment\/Prevention<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>HIV treatment is carried out with a combination of antiretroviral drugs (HAART), which prevent the virus from multiplying and slow the progression of the disease, allowing patients to live with HIV as a chronic condition.<\/p>\n<p>Prevention is based on consistent condom use, avoiding the sharing of sharp objects, regular testing for HIV\/STIs, and public education aimed at reducing social stigma.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Epidemiological Data<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Greece:<\/strong><br \/>\nIn <strong>2025<\/strong>, <strong>526<\/strong> new HIV cases were diagnosed and reported, of which 420 (79.9%) were men and 106 (20.1%) were women.<\/p>\n<p>Among the new HIV diagnoses: <strong>37.3%<\/strong> were transmitted through sexual contact between men, <strong>14.4%<\/strong> through heterosexual sexual contact, <strong>12.6%<\/strong> through sharing intravenous drugs, <strong>35.7%<\/strong> of cases had an undetermined mode of transmission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By October 31, 2025<\/strong>, a total of <strong>21,815<\/strong> cases had been diagnosed in Greece (including AIDS cases).
