It is observed every year on <strong>February 28<\/strong>, with the main goal of emphasizing <strong>prevention, early diagnosis, care, and support<\/strong> for people with rare diseases worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a rare disease? (1)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A disease is considered rare when it affects <strong>fewer than 1 in 2,000 people in the general population<\/strong>, according to the European definition.<\/p>\n<p>In Europe, it is estimated that over <strong>6,000 different rare diseases<\/strong> have been recorded to date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Epidemiological Data (1,2)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than <strong>300 million people worldwide are living with a rare disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Approximately<strong> 5% of the global population<\/strong> is affected by a rare disease overall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>72% of rare diseases are genetic in origin, and about 70% manifest during childhood.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Greece, approximately <strong>350,000 to 600,000<\/strong> people are affected<\/p>\n<p>Only about <strong>5% of rare diseases currently have an approved treatment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Objectives of the Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rare Disease Day aims to:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increase knowledge and awareness<\/strong> of rare diseases among the general public and relevant authorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlight the need for early diagnosis and support<\/strong> for people living with rare diseases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Promote equal access to healthcare and social services<\/strong> for all, without discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>The message <strong>\u201cMore Than You Can Imagine\u201d<\/strong> reminds us that rare diseases are <strong>not as distant or uncommon as they may seem<\/strong>.
